The European Cultural Foundation acts as a catalyst for change through arts and culture in Europe. Our aim is to inspire, engage and empower.
We are an independent foundation based in the Netherlands that has been operating across Europe for nearly 60 years. Our guiding principles have us committed to the whole of Europe and its neighbouring regions but we do target our support to where it is most needed. We champion and transmit cultural exchange and new forms of artistic expression. We share and connect knowledge across the European cultural sector, and campaign for the arts on all levels of political decision-making.
ECF is now embarking on a search for Narratives for Europe – seeking people and communities who are building stories and visions which shape Europe of today and tomorrow. This will be ECF’s primary theme for the coming three years in all the work we do. Our ambition is to ensure that these narratives are shared and spread across Europe and beyond, and are also brought into spheres of influence.
Our action © Monika Rut: European Foundation Centre in Brussels, June 2010 We pursue our vision on many fronts. For example, we directly support Europe’s cultural sector through our Grants programme. In 2009, ECF grants supported 223 individuals and organisations across EU and non-EU Europe to a total of €1,465,075. Our Youth and Media programme puts young people’s creativity with new media right at the heart of European debate, while our European Neighbourhood programme develops the expertise of cultural actors of change in countries neighbouring the EU. Our digital platforms work to bring different communities together. For example LabforCulture which experienced a 100% increase in user-generated content in 2009, is an established provider of information on cultural collaboration in Europe. We also engage in several advocacy campaigns and actions that seek to deliver a coherent and well-funded European strategy for culture. Our recent focus on cultural diversity has evolved into a unified strategy we are calling Narratives for Europe, in which community-building stories and visions with the power to renew Europe can be shared and multiplied.
Our vision We believe that culture engages and inspires people to transcend boundaries. The connecting power of culture is essential for creating open, inclusive and democratic societies, and as such is invaluable for building Europe.
Our mission The European Cultural Foundation initiates and supports cultural expression and interaction that empower people to realise a shared future in Europe. We enable voices that are too often unheard to be heard. We link inspirational people and ideas to cultural policy making both in local communities and on the European political stage.
Our ambition To be a catalyst of cultural expression and interaction that make our diverse societies in Europe more open and inclusive.
